In a time when everyone’s thinking about the environment and keeping an eye on their wallets, bartering and secondhand shopping are taking center stage as smart, eco-friendly options. A report from Euromonitor International shows that more people are turning to secondhand goods to reduce waste and save some cash. Euromonitor International report shares the global trend toward sustainability, with 24% of global consumers now choosing secondhand products to minimize their environmental impact. And 41% of consumers repair outdated items instead of replacing them, driven by economic pressures and a desire to reduce waste.

Owning second-hand items is gaining popularity, particularly among younger generations. According to Jorge Zuniga, Senior Sustainability Insights Consultant at Euromonitor International, recycling and sustainable shopping are critical to Gen Z and Millennials. Over 40% of younger consumers shop secondhand every few months, and more than 50% of those aged 15-44 plan to make a secondhand purchase soon.

Bartering helps extend the life of products by ensuring they are reused rather than thrown away, which reduces waste and cuts down on the demand for new production. Bartering also eliminates the need for cash, making it an economically smart choice that saves money. It encourages creativity and resourcefulness, highlighting the value of exchanging items instead of discarding them. Swapping and reusing items are powerful ways to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions, and promote sustainable consumption. These practices keep items out of landfills, reduce the demand for new production, and encourage mindful resource use. Embracing these habits not only saves money but also helps conserve resources and contribute to a healthier planet. Would you give bartering a try? What items would you like to trade?
